Interview by Sandra - 2006-12-23
How old were you when you were given your first instrument?
Fredrik got a flute at the age of nine and Martman never got an instrument of his own but his family bought a keyboard when he was ten. Karl probably got a bunch of instuments but we don’t know the details.
How did you meet?
Back in 1986 Martman moved to the same block as Fredrik lived in. Our first meetings ended up with fights at the lawn but later on we became good friends. Carl and Sebastian were childhood mates and the all four of us met in high school 1996. Carl and Fredrik ended up in the same class and ideas about a band took form.
How came the idea of forming a band?
Once a year the high school arranged a talent show for all the students, with students as the performers. Carl and Fredrik thought it would be a great idea to put together a great band and give the audience a great show. However, Carl already played in a band called END so the plans were put on ice. This first attempt took place during the spring 1998.
But the idea of starting a band wasn’t just bullshit, it was heavily thought about during Carl and Fredrik’s school trip to Berlin a few weeks later. Although they were under the influence of alcohol they decided to form a band who should play Verve covers only. Imagine Carl and Fredrik singing Lucky Man in a bus at the Rostock Custom Service trying to impress some of the girls, but with no luck at all.
End splitted up during the summer and opened up for a new constellation. All the ideas melted down to a core of lo-fi and rock and in October 1998 Spiral Stairs were born.
Why this band's name "Spiral Stairs"?
We were heavily influenced by Pavement at the time we started the band so we though it was a great anecdote to take the name from Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg, guitarist in Pavement.
What kind of music do you play exactly?
We play indie rock with catchy melodies and a great lo-fi soul.
Since when have you been known in your country?
We’re not known at all. Maybe some youngsters know our faces but we can’t tell. We guess we’re just too much of an underground act around here.
What is the average age of the band?
26,33 years
How did you find new musicians after the departure of Carl Dalemo & Sebastian Didier?
When Sebastian left Carl told us he had a friend who could play the bass and sing, he was called Karl. We took Karl for a test over half a year and finally we took him under our wings. He’s safe now...
Is there a place you'd like to play?
Anywhere with beer!
What's your best place you have played so far?
Nothing spectacular to be honest...to unknown you know...
What are your musical influences?
A whole bunch of great artists and bands, but some of the most important for the sound of Spiral Stairs are Guided By Voices, Pavement, Ash, Sonic Youth, Weezer, Beach Boys and The Beatles.
Through the years we’ve picked up a lot more influences but the ones mentioned were the flavour of 1998.
What do you think makes you special amongst all the bands at the moment?
We have no secret plan, we play because we have to otherwise we will go under. Just the fact that we don’t feel like we’re anything special, just greater than the average punk/rock band with the “right” poses and the “right” attitude.
What is your favourite band(s)?
Oh mama! We all have so many different favourites. You’re dealing with real music lovers here. Everything from classic rock like Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath and Guns n’ Roses to lo-fi/pop/rock acts like Guided By Voices, Blur, Nirvana and Clash. We could go on and dropping names forever. We think you’ve got the picture.
Do you have a favourite song?
Same thing here actually. But here’s three of them:
Game Of Pricks – Guided By Voices
Debaser – Pixies
Allt På Ett Kort – Bob Hund
What can we listen to on your" ipod"?
Currently Oasis, Queens Of The Stoneage, Black Crowes, Replacements, Led Zeppelin, Ryan Adams, The Cure...bla bla bla...hehe...
Have you got a favourite song in your songs?
Arkansas?, Peltor The Vulture and Wallpaper From The Past.
How and where do you find inspiration for your songs?
Everywhere, life. You know...love...politics...anger...and just relaxing in general...sweet...
Who write the songs?
We all do. A little bit here and a little bit there. It’s like a stew with ideas and sometimes Fredrik chop the carrots, Martman handles the soup ladle and Karl keeps the temprature just right. Mmm, delicious soup of Spiral Stairs!
Sometimes we cut and paste ideas and sometimes we jam until we get a good idea.
How many CDs ( EPs, album..) have you released?
Six CDs with a different number of songs on each one of them.
If you could make a wish for Christmas, what it would be?
World peace of course! But we would also like to see Filippa Reinfeldt smash her husband in his face with a bunch of clams.
What are you planning for 2007? We have no plan, so it looks like we’re going for the real break trough. Hahaha!
